An abandoned mosque sits outside a sea wall in Pluit, Jakarta, Indonesia. Confronted with both sea level rise and subsidence due to groundwater extraction in this city of more than 10 million people, the government has announced plans to relocate the national capital to the island of Borneo. Research has much to offer communities around the globe that are facing displacement from climate change—but community members must be involved, their voices heard.

Digitally reconstructed skull of a hominin from 130,000 years ago. This previously unrecognized Homo group, identified at Nesher Ramla, Israel, sheds light on Neanderthal origins and the evolutionary history of the Homo lineage. Late members of this group inhabited the Levant contemporaneously with Homo sapiens and interacted with them.

Plastic waste is accumulating rapidly in our environment and will leave a geological signature like fossils or archaeological remains. Here, we see an illustrated record, not to scale, of a region's past and the plastic consumer waste that will eventually leave a permanent mark on Earth's history and carbon cycle.

The fractal-like forms of the Romanesco cauliflower are some of the most spectacular in the plant kingdom. These structures arose from the transformation of the cabbage inflorescence during the domestication process. Researchers show how perturbations of the floral gene networks combined with modifications of growth dynamics led to the emergence of such fractal forms.
