Stanis Malom, 15, from the small island of Lihir in Papua New Guinea, has a chronic leg injury from yaws. A global eradication effort fizzled decades ago, and this disfiguring bacterial disease still afflicts people in at least 14 countries. The discovery that a single tablet of a common antibiotic can cure yaws has sparked a new eradication effort.

Strobe-lit view of the Summit supercomputer, capable of a peak performance of 200 petaflops, at the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Widespread advances in computing power and algorithm development have greatly enhanced modeling capabilities in astronomy, physics, chemistry and materials science, and biology.

Jets of hot plasma trace magnetic field lines that leap out into space from the Sun's surface, as shown in this colorized image from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which stares at the Sun from a vantage near Earth. New observatories will study these magnetic fields up close to understand how they heat the Sun's atmosphere and launch the solar wind.

Iguazú Falls, Earth's largest waterfall system, on the Iguazú River between Argentina and Brazil. Earth's turbulent rivers and streams are natural hotspots for atmospheric exchange. Thousands of satellite images have revealed that rivers and streams cover nearly 45% more of the world's surface than previous spatial estimates, indicating that these water bodies contribute more to atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gas than previously thought.
